SHUSH
SHUSH announce their London debut with a true icon of UK music and one of our biggest musical inspirations: Dego.
"In the nature of our shared love for diverse music, the sounds streaming out of the UK capital have always been at the core of what we do. Especially the music born out of West London in the late 90s — by the likes of IG Culture, Kaidi Tatham, 4hero & co. – have been education and foundation for our nights, label, and sound system.
It’s a full circle moment for us to invite one of the architects of this movement – Dego – to spin at our first London night. For those who aren’t hip to the history, he was at the forefront of the development of Jungle, Breakbeat and most notably, Bruk. Amongst many contemporaries — his 4hero partner-in-crime Marc Mac, Seiji, Daz-I-Kue, Kaidi, all of the Bugz (too many to mention) — and within the guise of many aliases, he pioneered a new style of music.
In it he continues to fuse the live feel of artists such as Herbie Hancock with the harmonic sensibilities of Roy Ayers, the rawness of hip-hop and a heavy nod to the house music coming out of the US, all drenched in a low-end fitting of the sound systems that guided the culture. His label, 2000black, is the epitome of his world — a diverse catalog rooted in rhythm and funk.
Alongside Dego, we’re excited to have our sister Saige Sounds – one our favourite DJs in the city – play. Through her soulful sets and her curatory work with Wax Poetics and Studio Sula, she’s established herself as one of London’s most unique musical presenters. For a special b2b situation, she’s joined by Ken Okuda, a selector equally as seasoned and diverse, making his London return.
D’Monk will be playing one of his live sets – straight from the MPC and a mixing board – showcasing his trademark machine funk. Combining grit, finesse and feeling, this performance is not to be missed (as many of you will know). To round things off, our own Orlando Rosé will be handling vibrations on wax, bringing his unique touch.
Plus, carnival on Sunday? Can’t go wrong."
